I have seen Pat Benatar at least 12 times, including twice on Broadway and during the long Toronto run. It had been a few years, so we decided to try this production at the Detroit Opera House. Expectations were lowered when we saw that the understudy was playing the Phantom for our show night, but other than having the chance to enjoy the story again, I was not expecting anything special from the Detroit production.
This was one of the best productions I have seen. Not only could the Phantom (Andrew Varela), Christine, and Raoul sing very well, but there was so much expression in their both their singing and general acting style. While everyone's lines were the same, everyone seemed to make their characters more dimensional than I have seen in other shows. This was true for some of the secondary characters such as Andre, Firman, and Piangi. If you have never seen a Phantom show before, go enjoy it all over again. I have not cried at the end since the first few shows, but this one started the emotions again.
